The Shimonita onion, named after the Japanese town for which it originated, is a Negi-type bunching onion. Each onion, slenderly shaped like a traditional bunching onion, grows to be more like a small leek in terms of its final size. Shimonita onions take nearly a year to develop to their full potential, but the wait is worth it — when cut in half lengthwise and grilled, the exceptionally sweet flavor of these onions is incomparable!
